Rabbi Yerachmiel Shapiro organized the first Great Red Bank Latke Festival in celebration of Hanukkah. The festive event generated a lot of interest from young and old alike.
The event featured a dreidle (spinning top) tournament, singing, dancing, dinner and games. Many brought their own menorahs to add to the community candlelighting ceremony. The room was bright with glowing candlelight!.
Featured were two latke-eating contests – one for adults and one for kids. “Latke” is Yiddish for potato pancakes. The contestants enthusias-tically dived into their plates amid much laughter.
Congregants Marvin and Betty Goldin debated the virtues of eating latkes versus donuts to celebrate the miracle of the oil lasting eight days at Hanukkah. There was no clear victor so the debate continues.
Donations of food were brought for donation to a local food bank.
Everyone from young to old enjoyed the activities.
