Congregation Beth Shalom celebrated Purim on Sat., Feb. 27 and Sun., Feb. 28, 2010 with a unique reading of Megillat Esther, the story of Purim, which commemorates the redemption of the Jewish People.
Rabbi Yerachmiel Shapiro lent his usual energy and fun to the occasion as he read in voice for the various characters. Of course, he was in costume. You really haven’t enjoyed Purim until you’ve heard Rabbi Yerachmiel’s Esther!
It was a memorable celebration with lots of laughter and noisemaking. Purim services were followed by a costume contest on Saturday and a lunch party on Sunday.
One important mitzvah of Purim is to participate in Mishloach Manot, the sending of treats to friends. For the first time, Purim gift baskets were available through a Sisterhood fundraising project. All who participated had a great time. Truly, Purim is a holiday where one can know the joy of sharing, giving and receiving.
